My research is focused on efforts to domesticate the native prairie plant Silphium integrifolium (rosinweed) for use as a perennial oilseed crop. Specifically, my project involves work to understand the genetics of traits that produce the “domestication syndrome” in silphium, continued selection for domesticated silphium, production of genetic resources to speed the selection process. Ultimately, I would like to pursue the idea of de novo domestication as a route to increased crop diversity as a part of my career, either in academia or with a non-governmental organization.
